1 Peter 5:8-14
1 Peter 5:8-14
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

I. Alertness
Verse 8- “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Adapted from Precious Remedies against Satan’s Devices by Thomas Brooks:
Satan dangles the bait but hides the hook
Satan emphasizes the freeness of grace before we sin
Satan emphasizes the heaviness of guilt after we sin
Satan reveals the blessings of the wicked without the consequences of their wickedness.
Satan shows us the cross without the crown.
Satan presents to us the difficulties of holy duties.
Satan causes us to remember our sin more than our savior.
II. Resistance
Verse 9- Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
James 4:7- "Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Klaus Schilder: “It is the peculiar majesty of Jesus that he can conquer man without man’s first approaching him. But Satan’s frailty is proved by this, that he cannot approach a soul unless that soul has first turned to him.”
Colossians 1:23- if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard.
III. Assurance
Verses 10-11- “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen”
Grudem: “all loss will soon be made right, and that for eternity.”
Verses 12-14- By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ
