Exodus 20:14

13 You shall not commit adultery.

Outline:
I. The Seventh Commandment and the Covenant
II. The Seventh Commandment and Christ
III. The Seventh Commandment and Redemption

I. The Seventh Commandment and the Covenant
Desmond Alexander: “The degree of commitment and intimacy that exists in marriage sets it apart from all other relationships. It represents the pinnacle of human relations: no other can compare with it.”

Lev 20:10- If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

Hebrews 13:4- Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

“It takes everything from us and gives nothing back. The few moments of pleasure it gives are sin’s great deception.”

Proverbs 6:27-28- Can a man carry fire next to his chest
and his clothes not be burned?
28        Or can one walk on hot coals
and his feet not be scorched?
29        So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
none who touches her will go unpunished

Prov 6:32-33- He who commits adultery lacks sense;
he who does it destroys himself.
33        He will get wounds and dishonor,
and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

II. The Seventh Commandment and Christ
Matthew 5:27-30- “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

1 Thess 4:3-4- For this is the will of God, your sanctification:2 that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body3 in holiness and honor,

Eph 5:3- But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.

Martin Luther: “[T]his commandment applies to every form of unchastity, however it is called. Not only is the external act forbidden, but also every kind of cause, motive, and means. Your heart, your lips, and your whole body are to be chaste and to afford no occasion, aid, or encouragement to unchastity.”

Randy Alcorn: “Tomorrow's character is made out of today's thoughts. Temptation may come suddenly, but sin doesn't.”

III. The Seventh Commandment and Redemption
Jer. 5:7-8- “How can I pardon you?
                        Your children have forsaken me
and have sworn by those who are no gods.
When I fed them to the full,
            they committed adultery
and trooped to the houses of whores.
8          They were well-fed, lusty stallions,
each neighing for his neighbor’s wife

Hos 4:1-2
Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land; 2 there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

Hos 3:1
And the LORD said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods”

Psalm 51: 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

O Great God
Help me now to live a life
That's dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
From the evils that I face
You are worthy to be praised
With my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heaven
Glorify Your Name through me
