Exodus 20:7

Exodus 20:7
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

God alone has intrinsic authority, we don’t. We’re all creatures, we’re all given names. He is the Creator; He tells us His name. God alone has authority over everything and everyone.

I. The meaning of God’s name [v7]
II. The misuse of God’s name [v7]
III. The majesty of God’s name [Ps 8:1]

I. The meaning of God’s name [v7]
7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

We cannot separate God’s personal name from who He is. His name reveals who He is. His name represents His reputation. God’s name represents His entire identity.

II. The misuse of God’s name [v7]
7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

A good, literal reading is this: Do not lift up God’s name for nothingness.

We are not to talk about God as if He were nothing, or empty, or weightless, or trivial. We ought not be careless, or casual, or disrespectful in relating to God. Using God’s name in any thoughtless or profane way is taking His name in vain, it’s to misuse His name.

Does your speech, do these expressions, really honor God? Do they communicate God’s worth or God’s worthlessness?

…the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

III. The majesty of God’s name [Ps 8:1]
Ps 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.

John Calvin: [God’s will in] this commandment is that we hallow the majesty of His name…We should be zealous and careful to honor His name with godly reverence.

Ps 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.

Ps 66:2 sing the glory of His name; give to Him glorious praise!

Ps 72:19 Blessed be His glorious name forever!

Deut 28:58 that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God.

Col 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Cor 6:11 But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

We are “Christians” and we bear our Savior’s name. His name is associated with everything we do and say. Our reputation is a reflection of his reputation. So are we living to honor and glorify his name? Do people --- by the way you think, speak, and act --- do they see Christ in you? Are you honoring his name?

Phil 2:9-11 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
