1 Peter 4:7-9

1 Peter 4:7-9
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

I. Live in light of the End
Verse 7- “The end of all things is at hand”

1 Corinthians 10:11- “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.”

Heb 10:25- “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Jonathan Edwards’ Resolutions

5. Resolved, never to lose one moment of time; but improve it the most profitable way I possibly can.

7. Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life.

17. Resolved, that I will live so as I shall wish I had done when I come to die.

18. Resolved, to live so at all times, as I think is best in my devout frames, and when I have clearest notions of things of the gospel, and another world.

19. Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if I expected it would not be above an hour, before I should hear the last trump.

50. Resolved, I will act so as I think I shall judge would have been best, and most prudent, when I come into the future world.

55. Resolved, to endeavor to my utmost to act as I can think I should do, if I had already seen the happiness of heaven, and hell torments.

II. Be Self-Controlled
Verse 7- “therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

1 Peter 1:13- Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 5:8- Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

III. Love Earnestly
Verse 8- “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”

Proverbs 17:14- The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so quit before the quarrel breaks out.

Proverbs 17:9- Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.

Proverbs 19:11- Good sense makes one slow to anger; and it is his glory to overlook an offense.

1 Corinthians 13:5- Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Proverbs 10:12 which says, "Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses."

Grudem: “Where love abounds in a fellowship of Christians, many small offences, and even some large ones, are readily overlooked and forgotten. But where love is lacking, every word is viewed with suspicion, every action is liable to misunderstanding, and conflicts abound – to Satan’s perverse delight”

IV. Show Hospitality
Verse 9- “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling”

Rom. 12:13- Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Heb. 13:2- Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
