Exodus 33:12-23

12 Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in Your sight, please show me now Your ways, that I may know You in order to find favor in Your sight. Consider too that this nation is Your people.” 14 And He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If Your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not in Your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and Your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?” 17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.” 19 And He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you My name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” He said, “you cannot see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by Me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while My glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”

God expresses anger, God can be grieved, especially when His love is betrayed and His law is broken.

I.         A prayer for the knowledge of God [vv12-13]
Consider too that this nation is Your people.”

This prayer of Moses is a prayer for the knowledge of God; not just head knowledge, but to really know God in a deep, personal, relational way.

A lot of people know about God, but how many truly know God? Many people believe in God, but how many really believe God? There’s a difference, a huge difference.

To be known by God, to know God, and to make Him known. Is there a greater pursuit in life than this?

Jn 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Phil 3:8-10 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith, 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection.

Jer 9:23-24 Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

II.        A prayer for the presence of God [vv14-17]
14 And He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If Your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not in Your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and Your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?” 17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”

Without God, the Promised Land was another Egypt. That’s the kind of heart God wants, the heart that says, “If I have nothing but God, I have everything. And if I have everything but God, I have nothing.”

John Piper: “The critical question for our generation --- and for every generation --- is this: If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ were not there?”

15 If Your presence will not go with me.

Corrie ten Boom: “We don’t know that Jesus is all we need until Jesus is all we have.”

III.      A prayer for the glory of God [v18]
18 Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”

John Piper: “The glory of God is the infinite beauty and greatness of God’s manifold perfections.”

As “glory junkies”, we live for these things; we live to be in awe of things.

When will we learn we were made for a greater glory, a greater awe?

19 I will make all My goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you My name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

We were made to know God, to enjoy His presence, and to live for His glory.
