Exodus 13:1-2, 11-16

1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine." … 11 "When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the LORD all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the LORD's. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when in time to come your son asks you, 'What does this mean?' you shall say to him, 'By a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15 For when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all the males that first open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.' 16 It shall be as a mark on your hand or frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt."

Theology is for doxology. We learn about God so we can live for God, the information is for transformation, the learning is for living, the truth is for life.

Eph 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.

B.B. Warfield: “There is not a title of Christ more precious to Christian hearts than ‘Redeemer’…[this title reminds us] of what it cost him to procure this salvation for us. It is the name specifically of the Christ of the cross…that he paid a mighty price for [our salvation].”

I.          One for all [vv1-2]
II.        Redeemed by another [vv11-13]
III.       Teach the truth [vv14-16]
IV.       A costly salvation [1 Pet 1:19]

I.         One for all [vv1-2]
1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine."

“One for all” here in Exodus 13 means that the firstborn sons, as they were set apart or consecrated to the Lord, represented the entire family to God.

II.        Redeemed by another [vv11-13]
11 "When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and your fathers, and shall give it to you, 12 you shall set apart to the LORD all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn of your animals that are males shall be the LORD's. 13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.

13 Every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.

To redeem something was to get it back by paying a price.

Titus 2:14 [Jesus] who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

III.      Teach the truth [vv14-16]

While we don’t believe in baptizing infants or baptizing anyone apart from a public profession of faith, we do understand the importance of raising our children in godly homes and churches and wanting their lives to be given to the Lord for worship and service.

The most important voices for your kids, and the primary teachers for your kids, are you parents. So teach them the truth.

What the Exodus rituals teach us, at the very least, is that God is to rule our lives, that we are not to live for ourselves or our own personal happiness but God is the only one who has right ownership of us and who alone can save us and satisfy us.

IV.       A costly salvation [1 Pet 1:19]
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
