Exodus 10:21-29

I.          Sun worshipers and self worshipers
II.        God creates and God de-creates [vv21-23]
III.       Physical darkness and spiritual darkness [v24]
IV.       Physical light and spiritual light [vv23-26]
V.        Hardened rejection and humble repentance [vv27-29]

I.         Sun worshipers and self worshipers
Then there was their supreme deity, Amon-Re, the god who created the Egyptians, the god who has no rival, known as the solar god, and the god who ordered the cosmos. And it was this chief god, Amon-Re, that Pharaoh not only worshipped but represented.

What do we admire, revere, and love more than God? What do we put our trust in today? Where is our hope? Who do we love most? Who is our supreme deity? I’d say for Americans, it’s self. The fact is, we honor and love ourselves the most.

Egyptians worshipped the sun; Americans worship the self.

II.        God creates and God de-creates [vv21-23]
21 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt." 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days…

God is showing His power over creation. And you know how He shows this power? He can unmake what He makes.

What happens when you die and stand before this God for judgment? If you are still looking to yourself to save you, you’re in big trouble. Forsake self-confidence and embrace Christ-confidence.

III.      Physical darkness and spiritual darkness [v24]
24 Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, "Go, serve the LORD; your little ones also may go with you; only let your flocks and your herds remain behind."

Jn 3:19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

1 Jn 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Jesus loved his bride the church, Jesus died for his bride the church. What makes you think you can love Jesus and not love his bride the church? What makes you think you can commit to Christ and not commit to his bride the church? And what makes you think you can be a Christian and not take up your cross, not deny yourself, and not follow him?

IV.       Physical light and spiritual light [vv23-26]
23 …but all the people of Israel had light where they lived. 24 Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, "Go, serve the LORD; your little ones also may go with you; only let your flocks and your herds remain behind." 25 But Moses said, "You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. 26 Our livestock also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the LORD our God, and we do not know with what we must serve the LORD until we arrive there."

1 Jn 1:5 God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Eph 5:8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.

25 But Moses said, "You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God. 26 Our livestock also must go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we must take of them to serve the LORD our God.

There is no time of idle Christianity. What sacrifices has God asked you to make? What needs can you fill in your home and in your church? How are you giving you time, your talents, and your treasures? Is there anything in your life that you won’t give over to the Lord?

V.        Hardened rejection and humble repentance [vv27-29]
27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, "Get away from me; take care never to see my face again, for on the day you see my face you shall die." 29 Moses said, "As you say! I will not see your face again."

Time after time after time, Pharaoh just pushed God aside, as it were. Here’s my application for you: Don’t presume God’s salvation will always be there.

If you are alive right now, if you get to hear the gospel of God’s love and forgiveness in Christ, don’t squander it. Don’t waste it. Don’t try to bargain or negotiate the terms. Humbly ask God to forgive you through the blood of His Son Jesus. Ask God to help you repent of your sins and believe that Jesus saves. His gracious invitation won’t last forever.

Rev 16:10-11 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds.
