III.       A Message of Judgment
IV.       A Promise of Salvation

I.         An Introduction to Micah
1 The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth…

The name “Micah” means “Who is like the Lord?”

Mic 7:18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression?”

1 The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Micah will call on the people to remember their God, to turn to Him, and to find pardon and peace in the Lord.

II.        A Word from the Lord
1 The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth…

2 Pet 1:21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

John Calvin: “We owe to the Scripture the same reverence which we owe to God, because it has proceeded from Him alone.”

Ps 138:2 …You have exalted above all things Your name and Your word.

Scripture is true and transforming, precious and powerful. Church, don’t miss out on it. Get into the Word so the Word gets into you.

III.      A Message of Judgment
1 The word of the Lord that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Mic 1:9 For her [Samaria’s] wound is incurable, and it has come to Judah; it has reached to the gate of my people, to Jerusalem.

Micah would primarily do two things: forth-tell (preach) and fore-tell (predict).

The prophetic message of judgment is a very significant theme in the Bible. Warning of judgment plays an important role in both condemnation and salvation. Sinners must be warned.

Mic 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

We should also think about these warnings for ourselves and whether we are careful how we live in this world.

Is God alone seated on the throne of our hearts? What idols are we entertaining and embracing? Do we believe the truth of Scripture, all of it? Is contentment in your heart or a spirt of comparison? Do you worship here on Sundays but then rush off to other “temples of worship” and worldliness during the week.

Mic 6:13 Therefore I strike you with a grievous blow, making you desolate because of your sins.

2 Thes 1:9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord.

Matt 25:41 Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

IV.       A Promise of Salvation
Mic 7:18-19 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

That was the pattern of ancient Israel through the ages --- mostly disobedience, mostly idolatry, mostly bad kings and leaders --- but God would always have a remnant and be the covenant-keeping God of His people.

Mic 5:2,4-5 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days...And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.
