11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

I. Grace Brings Us Salvation [v11]
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people

There’s no more important reason to live-out faithful, gospel-adorning Christianity than this: v11 “For the grace of God has appeared...” What motivation, what encouragement.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people.

Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.

God’s grace, God’s condescending loving-kindness toward sinful humanity, is for all the world --- people from every tribe and tongue and nation. No kind of person and no class of person is excluded from God’s saving grace.

Does your heart flood with wonder and gratitude because God’s grace has appeared in the person of Jesus?

II. Grace Trains Us For Godliness [v12]
12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.

Rom 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

As you drink deeply at the fountain of the gospel, as you sit under the teaching of amazing grace and undeserved kindness toward you in Christ, this grace teaches you to reject everything that goes against God and His Word.

“The goal of the godly is to adorn the gospel with credibility and evidence of its power in their lives. The indulgence of ‘ungodliness and worldly passions’ ultimately is a denial of the Word of God and the message of the Savior. If our lives exhibit no freedom from the passions of this world, then our lives implicitly say the gospel makes no difference.”

Christians, think about your life, your lifestyle, your priorities, your habits, your entertainments, your leisure. Does your life show that you are a student in God’s school of grace? Do you exhibit a true commitment, a Christian faithfulness, by saying no to ungodliness and worldly passions and saying yes to a self-controlled, upright, and godly life? Is God’s grace training you?

III. Grace Pushes Us Toward Glory [v13]
13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

The New Testament teaches that we live between two “appearings” --- when Christ first came in humility and when Christ returns in glory. We live in “the present age”, between the advents of our Lord.

Col 3:4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

1 Tim 6:14 [Be faithful]...until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Tim 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Jesus reigns now, it is a heavenly reign, but when He comes again, we won’t see anything new --- we will simply be shown, revealed, what has been true all along.

So faithfully wait, and as you do, know that you are pushed from behind by the wonder of grace and pulled forward by the hope of glory.

IV. Grace Reminds Us Of Christ's Work [v14]
14 [Jesus] who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession.

V. Grace Makes Us Zealous For Good Works [v14]
14 ...who are zealous for good works.

Christians should love what is true and do what is good. We should preach the gospel every Sunday, and everyday to ourselves, and watch this grace transform us into people who are truly loving and zealous for good works.

2:7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity.

2:14 [Jesus] who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

3:1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work.

3:8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

3:14 And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

God saves you as you are, but He doesn’t keep you as you are. The gospel transforms lives.

15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
