Acts 6:8-7:60

Introduction (6:8-15)

Acts 6:7 “the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.”

Acts 6:13-14 - “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, 14 for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.”

The Dwelling Place of God

  1. Dwelling Place Promised to Abraham (7:2-17)

  2. Dwelling Place Promised to Moses (7:17-53)

  3. Dwelling Place Fulfilled in Christ (7:54-60)

1.     Dwelling Place Promised to Abraham (7:2-17)

7:2-3 “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.

7:5 “Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him.”

Heb. 11:8-10 “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.

7:8a - And he gave him the covenant of circumcision.

Rom. 2:29 “But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.”

7:8b - And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

Phil. 3:4-6 “though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.”

2.     Dwelling Promised to Moses (7:17-53)

God Raises up Moses to Bring Israel out of Egypt to the Promised Land (7:17-36)

7:17a “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham.”

7:30-33 - “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord: 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

7:35-36 - “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

Rom. 6:22-23 “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God Gave Moses the Law and the Tabernacle (7:37-38, 44-47)

Israel’s History of Idolatry and Desecrating the Dwelling Place of God (7:39-43, 48-53)

7:49-50 “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Did not my hand make all these things?”

“Don’t you know that I don’t need this building to dwell in, but you need the temple to make sacrifices with a humble and contrite heart or else I will cast you out of my presence and you will suffer my just wrath for your sins.”

7:51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit.” They are just like their fathers that killed the prophets and betrayed and murdered the "Righteous One,”

 3.     Dwelling Place Fulfilled in Christ (7:54-60)

Heb. 9:11-12 “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption

2 Cor. 6:16-18 - What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them.”

7:54-56 - Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

7:58 “Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.”
