1.    Honor your Father and Mother (v. 2a)
2.    How to Honor your Father and Mother (v. 1)
3.    The Promise Given to Children (v. 2-3)

1.    Honor your father and mother (v. 2a)
Gen. 8:21 - “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth.”

Ps. 51:5 - Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” Ps. 58:3 - The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.

Rom. 3:10-11 - “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.

Eph. 2:1-3 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”

Children have to be taught and trained the difference between right and wrong, so that they can be able to distinguish good from evil and be disciplined or punished when they do evil and rewarded when they do good. This is the ordained responsibility that God has given to parents as a common grace to restrain the evil that is in every person from youth.

John MacArthur, “The key to societal stability is reverence and respect for parents and their authority.”

Children, to honor your father and mother is to consider your parents as important and highly prized or valuable, so you are to highly esteem them or look up to them and respect them.

1 Peter 2:13 “Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme.”

1 Peter 2:17 “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”

2.      How to Honor your Father and Mother
a. Obey your Parents - v. 1 “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

Ezekiel 20:18-19 ““And I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, nor defile yourselves with their idols. 19 I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules.”

b. Give Reverence and Respect to your Parents
Your child needs a loving parent to teach them God’s word that will teach them what is right and wrong and discipline them when they do evil, they do not need a buddy or friend that lets them do whatever they want.

Prov. 13:24 “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.”

Respect has to do with having a high esteem for your parents and therefore you will place a high value or importance on what they tell you to do, so you will obey them.

Prov. 1:8-9 “Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.”

c. Show Them Gratitude

d. Honor your Parents when you are an Adult
Mark 7:9-10 “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.”

Prov. 23:22 “Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.”

3.      The Promise Given to Children - v. 2-3 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

2 Cor. 1:20 “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him (Christ).”

Eph. 6:1-3

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
