119 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that He Himself is doing. And greater works than these will He show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And He has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 30 I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of Him who sent me.”

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic…or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice.”

Rule-keepers observe; grace-debtors celebrate. Big difference.

Jn 5:17-18 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

I.          Jesus is one with the Father [vv19-20]
II.        Jesus has power to give life [vv21,24-26]
III.       Jesus will finally judge [vv22,27-30]

I.         Jesus is one with the Father [vv19-20]
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that He Himself is doing. And greater works than these will He show him, so that you may marvel.”

This gets to an application for parents: It isn’t enough that we merely discipline our children; we must disciple them.

Col 1:19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.
Jn 14:9 Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”?

Jesus said that he is God and is one with the Father. This claim demands a response from each of you. Will you reject him as a liar or lunatic, or will you fall down and worship him as the Lord God?

II.        Jesus has power to give life [vv21,24-26]
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will…24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life.

Religions try to make bad people good. Jesus makes dead people live. That’s the difference. He’s the difference. Has your life been changed by Jesus, the Son of God? Has he given you new life?

John Newton: “I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I wish to be. I am not what I one day will be. But, by the grace of God, I am not what I once was.”

vv21,24-25 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will…24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

III.      Jesus will finally judge [vv22,27-30]
22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son…27 And He has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. 30 I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of Him who sent me.

First, at death we are separated from our bodies. Eccles 12:7 The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

Second, those who die immediately enter into one of two conditions.

All people, in the disembodied state, whether believers or unbelievers, are awaiting the final judgment, when Jesus returns to raise the dead, judge the world, and make all things new. The hour is coming, that time is coming.

28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Heb 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.

29 those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

What is that resurrection of judgment? It’s hell.

Believing in Jesus is the most pressing, most urgent matter in anyone’s life. Turn to the resurrection and the life, and he will give you the resurrection of life.
