I am the Resurrection and the Life

Sunday, April 20, 2025
Pastor Jojo Ma

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

17-20 17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.

21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

We have lost the biblical practice of faithful lament and hopeful grieving.

1 Pet 5:7 [Cast] all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

23-24 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

D.A. Carson: “[Martha] still recognizes the peculiar intimacy [Jesus] enjoys with his Father, an intimacy that ensures unprecedented fruitfulness to his prayers.”

Martha is lamenting in faith and grieving with hope. Even in this darkness she sees clearly with the eyes of faith.

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Jn 5:28-29 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Acts 10:43 To [Jesus] all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Jn 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

This resurrection and this life are only for those who believe. This means that the Bible extends no hope to those who do not believe in Jesus.

Ask Jesus to forgive you of all your sins, pour your heart out to him in real repentance, and put your whole trust in the one who is the resurrection and the life.
