Children and Honorable Obedience

Family Matters: Message 3
Sunday, March 16, 2025
Pastor Jojo Ma

The best parenting gift we can give our kids is a stable, loving, gospel-displaying marriage.

3 reasons why children should honor and obey their parents...

I.         Honor and obey your parents because it shows your commitment to the Lord.
II.        Honor and obey your parents because it’s the right thing to do.
III.       Honor and obey your parents because it’s good for you.

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Pastor John MacArthur: “In God’s Word, parents have every truth and every guideline necessary for raising their children in righteousness and godliness. And what a child needs to know about how he should relate to his parents is there also.”

I.         Honor and obey your parents because it shows your commitment to the Lord.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise).

Notice Paul’s expectation here: he assumes children are in the congregations listening to the public reading and teaching of God’s Word.

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise).

Honor is more an attitude, while obedience is more an action.

Prov 10:1 A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

Prov 17:21 He who sires a fool gets himself sorrow, and the father of a fool has no joy.

Prov 19:26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who brings shame and reproach.

II.        Honor and obey your parents because it's the right thing to do.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

It’s the right thing to do to obey and honor one’s parents. It’s the wrong thing to dishonor and disobey one’s parents.

A brief word about honoring our aging parents

III.      Honor and obey your parents because it's good for you.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

This is why I say obey your parents because it’s good for you. It’s in the child’s best interest.

Healthy marriages and families typically are the soil from which healthy children spring.
