Matthew 1:18-21
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

I. The Righteous Man
Verses 18-19- “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.”
John 1:14- “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son4 from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Colossians 3:12- Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, Paul is telling us to wrap ourselves in these virtues of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. and he uses clothing language to describe how we are to wear these virtues. clothing is all about appearance.
II. The Virgin Birth
Verse 20- "But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 1:1- “The book of the genealogy, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
Lk 1:35- And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.”
Luke 2:19- "But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart."
Campbell Morgan has said, “It is the holy mystery, the touch of God upon the simple life that made it forever sublime. The virgin birth, or the birth of our Lord Jesus is something that we can never really fathom. It is something we can only adore.
III. The Savior, Jesus
Verse 21- “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Zechariah 9:9-10
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth
Matthew20:28- even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 26:28- for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
