Colossians 3:5-11

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

We believe we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Martin Luther: “Faith alone saves but saving faith is never alone.”

I.         The call to be killing sin
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you.

We don’t play with it, ignore it, or tolerate it. No, we execute it. We smash it. We kill it. You don’t let it live. This is all out war. Have no mercy toward your sin.

II.        The kinds of sins we must be killing
Sins of desire: 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Coveting is wanting something not rightfully yours. Coveting shows you are not content with what you have, with what God has given you. When you covet, you want something more than God and His provision and goodness. And that is basically idolatry.

Sins of division: 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices.

III.      The reasons to be killing sin
6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.

7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away.
