1 Peter 3:18-22

1 Peter 3:18-22

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison,20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

I.          Jesus has brought us to God [v18]
II.        Jesus saves (not baptism) [vv19-21]
III.       Jesus is King with all authority [v22]

I.         Jesus has brought us to God [v18]

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Milton Vincent: “On my worst days of sin and failure, the gospel encourages me with God’s unrelenting grace toward me. On my best days of victory and usefulness, the gospel keeps me relating to God solely on the basis of Jesus’ righteousness and not mine.”

Know the gospel, grow by the gospel. This is what Peter is showing us once again in v18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

II.        Jesus saves (not baptism) [vv19-21]

19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.

v20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

Whatever he said, he proclaimed his victory over all earthly powers and over the god of this age. It is a glorious picture of the victory of Christ.

vv20-21 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Just as the flood and the ark pictured death and life, so does baptism. It depicts spiritual death and life. the old self going under, being buried, then the new self coming up, being raised. It’s a picture of salvation. That’s how baptism saves you.

21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

III.      Jesus is King with all authority [v22]

22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Eph 1:19-21 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might 20 that He worked in Christ when He raised him from the dead and seated him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

He sits on the throne of the universe. No foe, no earthly power, no demon, not even satan, nothing and no one can keep you from the love, mercy, and protection of Jesus your King.

I.          Jesus has brought us to God [v18]
II.        Jesus saves (not baptism) [vv19-21]
III.       Jesus is King with all authority [v22]
