Sermon Notes

1 Peter 2:4-10

1 Peter 2:4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

6 For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,

                        a cornerstone chosen and precious,

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Peter 2:7   So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected

                        has become the cornerstone,”

1 Peter 2:8   and

              “A stone of stumbling,

                        and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

1 Peter 2:9- But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

I. Christ

1 Peter 2:4- As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,

Tozer: “The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One. Many ordinary treasures may be denied him, or if he is allowed to have them, the enjoyment of them will be so tempered that they will never be necessary to his happiness. Or if he must see them go, one after one, he will scarcely feel a sense of loss, for having the Source of all things he has in One all satisfaction, all pleasure, all delight. Whatever he may lose he has actually lost nothing, for he now has it all in One, and he has it purely, legitimately and forever.”

II. Access

5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

III. Honor

6 For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,

                        a cornerstone chosen and precious,

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Peter 2:7   So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
  has become the cornerstone,”

1 Peter 2:8   and

              “A stone of stumbling,

                        and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

1 Cointhians 1:23- “we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and folly to the Gentiles.”

1 Peter 1:7- “may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 4:13- “but rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.”

IV. Holiness

1 Peter 2:9- But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received merc

Exodus 19:5-6- “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be  my treasured possession among all peoples, for  all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a  kingdom of priests and  a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

Matthew 5:14-16- “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

End of verse 10, “Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy”

Grudem: “All the foregoing privileges are to be traced only to the undeserved favour of God”
