Won Without a Word

1 Peter 3:1-7

1 Peter 3:1-7

1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

1Peter 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you1 of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Outline:

I. Wives, Submit
II. Wives, Adorn
III. Husbands, Understand
IV. Husbands, Honor

I. Wives, Submit1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.

MacArthur- “it is more important what you are than what you say…The lovely, gracious, gentle submission of a Christian woman to her unsaved husband is the strongest evangelistic tool she has.  It's not what she says, it is what she is.”

II. Wives, Adorn3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

A. Focus on your Character“Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart”

B. Cultivate a Gentle, Quiet Spirit…with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious

C. Hope in God 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

III. Husbands, Understand1 Peter 3:7   Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way.”

IV. Husbands, Honor…showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Ephesians 5:28-29- “In the same way  husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church”

Honor your wives because she is the weaker vessel Col 3:19- Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.

Honor your wives so that your prayers will not be hindered

Won Without a Word

1 John 5:20-21

1 John 5:20-21

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

Milton Vincent, A Gospel Primer for Christians: "The gospel contains all that I need 'for life and godliness'. It is for this reason that God tells me to be steadfastly entrenched in the gospel at all times and never to allow myself to be moved from there...I must stay inside the gospel at all times."

1 Jn 3:1-2 "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are...Beloved, we are God's children now..."

John wants us to be defined by the gospel. This means he wants us to see ourselves as God's children. He wants us to stay insidethe gospel and not be defined by any other thing.

1 Jn 5:20 "And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life."

1 Jn 5:21 "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

What is an idol? It's anything or anyone that captures your heart more than God.

Paul Tripp: "Sinners tend to move away from defining themselves in relationship to their Creator and begin defining themselves in relationship to the creation."

Milton Vincent: "There is simply no other way to compete with the forebodings of my conscience, the condemnings of my heart, and the lies of the world and the devil than to overwhelm such things with daily rehearsings of the gospel."

5 questions to ask yourself and to help "[keep] yourselves from idols" (1 Jn 5:21):
1) Do you want what you want, or do you want Christ's Lordship over your life?
2) What is "a happy life" to you and how would you describe it?
3) How do you define success or failure in a particular situation?
4) When you are stressed or uneasy, where do you turn/what do you turn to?
5) What do you pray for?
