Life in His Name
John 20:30-31

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Everything John penned for his readership aimed at bringing sinners to faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

I. Jesus did many other signs not written in this book [v30]

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.

Jn 21:25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.

Jesus and the apostles would perform signs and wonders and miracles of all sorts to prove Jesus was the Christ and the very Son of God and the only Savior of the world.

What we have today is the infallible, inerrant, authoritative, sufficient Word of God in the 66 books of the Bible. And this book, the Bible, is enough for us to know Jesus and live a life pleasing to him.

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written this book.

II. That you may believe [v31]

31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God…

There are 3 aspects to true, saving faith: notitia, assensus, and fiducia.

The apostle John wrote his gospel account so that his readers would believe, truly believe. His purpose was primarily evangelistic.

III. That you may have life [v31]

31…and that by believing you may have life in his name.

“No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace.” We could also say, “No Jesus, no life. Know Jesus, know life.”

R.C. Sproul: People who don’t have Christ don’t have life, and they don’t even know it.

Eph 2:1-3 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

When John speaks of “life in his name”, he speaks of both present (already) and future (net yet) blessings.

Rev 22:4-5 They will see His face…They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

We Christians must take seriously this “life in his name”. We need to consider the implications of our salvation and all that we have now and all that is ours to come. This truth must transform us.

And how does one get this life? What must one do? Believe.
