Exodus 1:22-2:10

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live." 1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children." 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?" 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." So the girl went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, "Because," she said, "I drew him out of the water."

I.          A very wicked man
II.        A very special child
III.       A very great God

I.         A very wicked man
22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live."

This Pharaoh is a kind of anti-Christ because he hates the purposes of God and hates the people of God. He is desperate to destroy the covenant people of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

II.        A very special child
1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.

Ex 6:20 Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father's sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years.

Heb 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.

Moses’ parents feared God and walked by faith. And what was their faith? It was trusting the unseen God. Faith sees what the world doesn’t see; faith believes what the world ignores or rejects.

We must choose to live by faith and entrust our children and their lives and their futures to God, the One who is but cannot be seen with human eyes. We raise them to help them leave and pray they are secure in Christ and live Kingdom-focused lives.

Children are a blessing but they are not God. We are to love them but not as much as we love God. We are to want the best for them and that is to give them God. We should provide the best we can for them but not to the point of idolatry.

Parents, make 2021 a year of serious family discipleship and do all you can to personally walk with the Lord and point your kids in that same direction: to trust and love and follow the unseen God in Christ.

3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.

III.      A very great God
First, see the greatness of God in the basket.

Moses would live and die according to God’s timeline, not man’s. And it is the same for you and me. We will die when God decides.

In God’s sovereignty and providence, God saved Moses the same way He saved Noah. Both of them passed through deadly waters by means of an ark…a picture of salvation.

Second, see the greatness of God in the life of Pharaoh’s daughter. v5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.

Words like chance, luck, and coincidence don’t have a place in a Christian’s vocabulary. We don’t have that kind of blind faith. We trust in a great God who rules all human history for His glory and our joy.

6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children." she took pity, she had mercy, she had compassion.

Third, we see the greatness of God in the life of Moses’ sister. v4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.

vv7-8 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?" And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." So the girl went and called the child's mother.

Fourth, we see the greatness of God in the life of Jochebed. v9 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages."

Brothers and sisters, strive to remember just how sovereign, good, and great God is. Do you believe, deep down inside, that God is always doing what is best for you personally? Do you really believe this? You should. Rom 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

Who or what do you find it easy to live in greater awe of than God?

Moses would lead an exodus of Israel from Egyptian slavery toward the promised land. Jesus would accomplish a greater exodus of God’s people from slavery of sin to eternal life in the true promised land, the new heavns and new earth.

Are you trusting in Jesus today for salvation? Have you put your faith in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins? Believe on him today. Salvation is not found in Moses but in Christ alone.
