The End is Just the Beginning

What happened on January 3, 2021?

Exodus shows us the power and glory and faithfulness of God in real human history with real human beings.

There’s one more thing that makes Exodus especially epic: It points us to Christ. It is all-in on Jesus. The greatest thing about Exodus, the reason it is ultimately epic, is because it powerfully points us to the redemption we have in Christ.

“In Exodus, we have the gospel of the Old Testament.”

I.          Waiting for the glory of God
II.        Finally experiencing the glory of God
III.       Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God
IV.       Our journey and the glory of God

I.         Waiting for the glory of God
Q1 of the Westminster Shorter Catechism: What is the chief end of man? Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

Ex 14:17-18 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.

1-2 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “On the first day of the first month you shall erect the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.”

9 Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and consecrate it and all its furniture, so that it may become holy.

16 This Moses did; according to all that the Lord commanded him, so he did.

33 And he erected the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court.

II.        Finally experiencing the glory of God
34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

It was the glory of God, the God-ness of God, the majestic weight of His nature, the gravity of His very being filling this tent of meeting. It was a bright, radiant light like they had never seen.

35 And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

Lev 1:1-2 The Lord called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of livestock from the herd or from the flock.’”

Do you know this God? Do you know just how majestic and holy is He? Do you have average thoughts of God? Do you think of Him as merely a cosmic friend or genie? I love, love, love how A.W Tozer put it: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

This is why evangelism and missions are crucial. It’s not that people aren’t worshiping, it’s that people are worshiping false gods who can’t save. It’s only the blood of Christ that saves. There’s no other way to know God and be in fellowship with Him.

36-38 Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up. For the cloudof the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

III.      Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God
Heb 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God…

What God did for ancient Israel was wonderful, but what God has done for us in Christ is incomparable.

If the book of Exodus is true history, then we can also say that Exodus is truly “his story” --- it all points to him. Jesus said this of Moses in Jn 5:46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.

Col 1:19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

Jn 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Heb 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God.

Have you put your faith in Christ? Do you know Christ savingly so that you can know the Father? Jesus is the only blood sacrificice that God accepts. Would you believe on him today?

IV.       Our journey and the glory of God
Matt 28:20 …And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

This life, this earthly wilderness, it is full of difficulties and dangers, trials and temptations, thorns and thistles, sin and suffering. But my fellow Christians, remember that we have Christ, the promise of his presence. And we also have one another in the church.
