1 Peter 5:1-7

1 Peter 5:1-7
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,   not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;   not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders.  Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Outline:

I. Shepherd for the Crown

II. Clothe Yourselves with Humility

I. Shepherd for the Crown

Verse 1- “So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed”

Verses 2-3- shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.

Don’t shepherd under compulsion.

Don’t shepherd for shameful gain.

Don’t shepherd by domineering over the flock.

Matthew 20:25-26- But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,

Verse 4- “And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.”

II. Clothe Yourselves with Humility
Verse 5- “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders.  Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another,”

Phil 2:6-8- “who, though he was in  the form of God, did not count equality with God  a thing to be grasped,  7 but  emptied himself, by taking the form of a  servant,   being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

JC Ryle: “Young men, I beseech you earnestly, beware of pride. Two things are said to be very rare sights in the world— one is a young man that is humble, and the other is an old man that is content. I fear that this is only too true.”

1. God Opposes the Proud

End of verse 5-6- “for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”

Proverbs 3:34- “Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.”

Proverbs 11:2- When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

Proverbs 16:13- Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 29:23- One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

2. God’s Timing Is Perfect

Verse 6- “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,”

3. God Cares for You
7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Luke 12:32- “Fear, not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

Andrew Murray: “Humility is perfect quietness of heart. It is to expect nothing, to wonder at nothing that is done to me, to feel nothing done against me. It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised. It is to have a blessed home in the Lord, where I can go in and shut the door, and kneel to my Father in secret, and am at peace as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and above is trouble.”
