The Disciples Were Glad When They Saw The Lord
John 20:19-21
The life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ are the most important events of human history and the central truths of Christianity and our local church.
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you."
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week…
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews…
What is courage? Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is acting even though you have fear, right?
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
“Jesus was not subject to all the laws that govern our physical life. He could pass freely though unopened doors, and at will he could manifest himself, speak, stand, and walk, or subject himself to physical sense.”
Lk 24:36-37 Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.
Brothers and sisters, this is the kind of body you and I will have in the final, eternal state. When we live in the new Jerusalem, on the renewed earth, we will be like him and his body.
Jesus had removed their sins at the cross. Now, Jesus would remove their fears in the resurrection.
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."
Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
So there is peace with God. Friends, do you have this peace?
And do you have the peace of God?
v19 offers us the promise of peace. v20 gives us the blessing of joy. 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
In this world of COVID-19 and pandemics and hoarding and self-love and gripping fears, do those who know you see something radically different? Do they see peace? Do they see joy? Do they see the fruit of the Spirit? Do they see where your hope is rooted? Do they see Christ in you?
21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you." In these verses Jesus not only promises peace, he not only gives joy, he also sends us out. This is the call to faithful evangelism and missions.
The reality is that what gets us excited is what we tell people about. What we love is what we share.
John Piper: “For the Christian, there are 3 choices: go, send, or disobey.”
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav'n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
