The Goodness of Jesus
1 Peter 1:22-2:3
1 Peter 1:22-2:3
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you. 1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

I. Believing the gospel [v22]
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth…
All of our faith, all our love, all our efforts to persevere, everything about our lives is to be rooted in what Peter calls here in v22, the truth, “your obedience to the truth”.
Galatians 5:7 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?
Ephesians 1:13 In [Christ] you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.
Colossians 1:5 Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel.
1 Peter 4:17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God
2 Thessalonians 1:8 [When Jesus returns] in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
According to Scripture, the gospel is a summons by a King, the King, the King of all creation, to repent and believe.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth…
II. Loving the church [v22]
22…for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
Practically-speaking, where the rubber meets the road, the manifestation of your love for God is most shown in the way you love your local assembly.
22…for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
1 John 4:20-21 If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Remember how Jesus has loved you
III. Experiencing the new birth [v23]
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.
I want them to call God their Father. I want them to be God’s children. I want each of them to know Christ savingly through repentant faith.
Remember that there is power in the Word, there is sufficiency in the Word, there is hope in the Word, the living and abiding Word of God.
IV. Forsaking our sin [v1]
1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
We are God’s children. We need to be what we are.
The “Forgotten Places” of our lives
V. Longing for the Word [v2]
2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.
If you are not longing for God’s Word regularly, then something is off. It could be that you are taking in so much of the world’s milk that God’s nourishment isn’t appetizing any longer.
VI. Tasting the Lord’s goodness [v3]
3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
If you have tasted His goodness and believed the gospel, you will grow in loving your church, you will grow in forsaking your sin, you will grow in longing for His pure milk, the word of Christ.
Oh the goodness, the goodness of Jesus
Satisfied, He is all that I need
May it be, come what may, that I rest all my days
In the goodness of Jesus
