Exodus 20:15
15 You shall not steal.
I. We should not steal
II. We should be stewards
III. We should look to the Savior
I. We should not steal
Stealing is a human problem, or as Martin Luther rightly said, “We are all a band of thieves. If we will be hung, where will we get enough rope?”
II. We should be stewards
The 10 Commandments don’t tell us we are law keepers, they remind us we are law breakers, that we can’t keep the law for even one second.
Stealing shows that we don’t trust God in His provision.
Stealing attacks God’s providence for others.
We should look at life as managers and stewards since it is God who has given us all these things.
Prov 6:10-11 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.
Eph 4:28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
Godly thinking says this, “What’s mine is God’s, I’ll share it.” Blessed to be a blessing. Christians are givers, not hoarders.
Pastor R. Kent Hughes: “Everytime I give, I declare that money does not control me. Perpetual generosity is a perpetual de-deification of money.”
Matt 6:19-20 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
What investments are you making financially, relationally, and spiritually that will make a difference for eternity?
III. We should look to the Savior
Humans are glory thieves. We want glory for ourselves. We want people to love us, to praise us, even to worship us. We want to rule and do what we want, not what God wants. We are glory thieves. We want to steal what rightfully belongs to God and God alone: Glory and honor and praise.
This leads us to why we are here today, in this place, as a church family. There is good news. It’s called the gospel of Jesus Christ.
O come, all you unfaithful
Come, weak and unstable
Come, know you are not alone
O come, guilty and hiding ones
There is no need to run
See what your God has done
Christ is born, Christ is born
Christ is born for you
