Colossians 3:15-17

15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

III.       The thankful believer of Christ [v17]

I.         The ruling peace of Christ [v15]
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

So your personal holiness isn’t just about you and God. It is for the benefit of the body, specifically this local body of believers. As you fight sin and grow in maturity, you are building up this body. Your holiness has a profound effect on our harmony as one body and the health of this body.

15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Jn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Jesus’ peace is knowing you are no longer God’s enemy, that God is for you, that God loves you, that God is wit you. With His presence comes great peace. It’s a lasting and true peace.

“When disputes arise, the believer is to let the peace of Christ make the call.”

Eph 4:1-3 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

II.        The indwelling word of Christ [v16]
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

We can never really separate the peace of Christ from the word of Christ. They go together. The peace of Christ rules your heart when the word of Christ is residing there richly first.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

“Let the Word of Christ have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives.” [The Message]

If you want the peace of Christ to rule your heart and your relationships, the word must have centrality in your life, the word must have the run of your house, the word of Christ must dwell in your richly, abundantly, extravagantly. It’s really true. The deeper the indwelling word, the deeper the indwelling peace.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.

Col 1:28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

Brothers and sisters, get together with others for intentional spiritual edification.

If you are a member of the church, I hope you sense the weighty responsibility you have to engage in this ministry. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.

16… singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

III.      The thankful believer of Christ [v17]
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Thankfulness is a big theme in the Bible and ought to be a big thing in our hearts, in your heart and mine. Being thankful is something we choose to feel and express toward God. We can’t control circumstances or trials but we can respond with trust and thanksgiving. That’s not out of our control.

“Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.”

17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
