Exodus 20:12

12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

I.          Honoring Your Parents (Old Covenant)
II.        Honoring Your Parents (New Covenant)
III.       Honoring Your Parents (Application Today)

I.         Honoring Your Parents (Old Covenant)
Where does God begin teaching His people how to love neighbor? He starts with the family. Loving our neighor begins at home --- in our kitchens, in our living rooms, in our bathrooms, in our bedrooms.

If we don’t teach honoring and respecting authority in the home, don’t expect honoring and respecting anywhere.

The word ‘honor’ is the Hebrew word for ‘heavy’ or ‘weighty’. It’s the word used to describe the ‘glory’ of God.

Lev 20:9 For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him.

Deut 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, and they shall say to the elders of his city, “This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

Prov 6:20 My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

The 5th commandment is about giving honor to imperfect, sinful parents. We don’t honor our parents because they deserve it but because God deserves it.

II.        Honoring Your Parents (New Covenant)
Matt 15:4-6 For God commanded, “Honor your father and your mother,” and, “Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.” But you say, “If anyone tells his father or his mother, ‘What you would have gained from me is given to God,’ he need not honor his father.” So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.

Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land."

III.      Honoring Your Parents (Application Today)
Parents, you must teach your kids the importance of honor and respect in the home. But not only teach it, model it for them, especially in how you honor and worship and love God under His authority.

Rediscovering Church: Why the Body of Christ Is Essential: “God does not invite us to church because it’s a comfortable place to find a bit of spiritual encouragement. No, he invites us into a spiritual family of misfits and outcasts. He welcomes us into a home that’s rarely what we want yet just what we need.”

Rom 12:10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Let us love and honor one another here at CrossLife. Let us respect and honor and pray for our governing authorities. And let us care for and honor our fathers and our mothers.
