Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Our hearts are very busy.

The “put off/put on” pattern in the New Testament is crucial for Christian growth, for personal holiness, and for church harmony.

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved.

Eph 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will.

Put on Compassionate Hearts
This is a great picture of a compassionate heart, to enter the pain of others, to not necessarily have all the right words but to have the right grief and empathy. It’s to feel the emotion of others and enter into it.

Put on Kindness
Christian kindness is so much more than outward niceness. Kindness is an attitude, a mindset, a state of being which doesn’t worry about “me” but about “you”. It is, like love and compassion, it is outward or other-focused.

Put on Humility
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.

Phil 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

To count others more significant is to add up their needs, subtract your agenda, and find a way to bless them, even if it is inconvenient or costly to you. This is gospel humility and care for others.

Phil 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Put on Meekness (Gentleness)
2 Cor 10:1 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ.

Prov 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Put on Patience
Patience is a disposition of calm, of slowing down, of being settled especially when circumstances are hard.

Put on Forbearance
13 bearing with one another…

The idea here is an extension of patience. It is learning to lovingly put up with one another, lovingly tolerate one another.

Put on Forgiveness
13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

It’s so important that believers forgive one another, so much so, that if we are unwilling to forgive someone else of their sin against us, we should be concerned about whether or not we are truly forgiven, whether we have actually experienced the new birth and the love of Christ.

Put on Love
14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

This love, these virtues, when these characterize a church, when a church has this kind of people and this kind of culture and this kind of biblical warmth being practiced and put on, it’s this kind of church that will display both holiness and harmony that brings great glory to God.
