Colossians 2:6-7

 

6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

I.         A first walk [v6]
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him. 

The New Testament knows of no salvation apart from Christ as Lord.

Charles Spurgeon: “The Apostles preached the Lordship of Christ. The word ‘Savior’ occurs only twice in the Acts of the Apostles (5:31, 13:23). But it is amazing to notice the title ‘Lord’ is mentioned 92 times; ‘Lord Jesus’ 13 times; and the ‘Lord Jesus Christ’ 6 times in the same book. The Gospel is: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.”

II.        A rooted walk [v7]
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught…

Ps 1:3 [The blessed man] is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

Talk to yourself, preach to yourself, it’s an important discipline. Don’t spend too much time listening to yourself but learn to talk to yourself about spiritual truths.

7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught…

The key to being built up in Christ is to be rooted in Christ.

Rom 1:15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

Paul knew that the secret to Christian growth was the same gospel that initially saved people. Christians are saved by the gospel and we grow by the gospel. We never move on from the gospel.

III.      A thankful walk [v7]
7…abounding in thanksgiving.

You cannot be growing spiritually without also growing in gratitude. A healthy Christian walk overflows with thanksgiving to God. Do not be deceived: Thankfulness is a very good test of our spiritual state.
