Philippians 2:5-8

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Matt 20:25-28 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The Son of God, God of very God, dressed as a servant, washed the dirty feet of proud, arrogant creatures.

5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.

I.          The humility of Jesus before time [v6]
II.        The humility of Jesus in time [v7]
III.       The humility of Jesus in death [v8]

I.         The humility of Jesus before time [v6]
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

John Calvin was right when he said “the form of God” means the glorious majesty of being God.

Jn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in Your own presence with the glory that I had with You before the world existed.

Heb 1:3 [Jesus] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

He doesn’t just shine radiance, he is the radiance of the glory of God. And we would expect nothing less from the second person of the Trinity, the second person of the Godhead.

6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

II.        The humility of Jesus in time [v7]
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

So that was the emptying, his condescension by becoming a slave-man. And in doing so, by emptying himself, Jesus demonstrated his humility, not his lack of divinity.

His incarnation was not a subtraction of divinity but an addition of humanity. So Jesus was truly man, although he was not merely man.

III.      The humility of Jesus in death [v8]
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

No one humbled Jesus. You and I can be humbled. You and I should grow in humility. But Jesus was never humbled by anyone. No one humbled him. He humbled himself.

How does the humility of Jesus move you to love him and worship him? How does the humility of Jesus move you to want to be more like him? How does the humility of Jesus move you to deeper trust and obedience with your heavenly Father?

The primary thing is for each of us to remember God’s grace in our salvation. We always have to start with God and His good grace toward us. Reflect on your salvation testimony.
