Exodus 20:18-26

18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die." 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin." 21 The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. 22 And the LORD said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. 24 An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it. 26 And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.'"

I.         The Awe of God [vv18-21]

How would you describe the fear of God?

19 and [they] said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die."

Moses is that mediator of the old covenant but he really points to the true and better, the only mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.

20 Moses said to the people, "Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin."

True salvation brings about true obedience. Israel was saved out of Egypt and called to obedience in the 10 Commandments. We under the new covenant are saved out of the Egypt of our sin and called to obedience of the new commandment, the law of Christ, the law of love.

Ps 96:4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

Do you fear God? Do you really love God? Is your life reflecting this fear and love through obedience to Him?

II.        The Worship of God [vv22-26]

Jn 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. G must be worshipped in spirit and truth.

22 And the LORD said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.'"

26 And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.

III.      The Blessing of God [v24]
24…In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.

Gen 12:2-3 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
